Rev counter woes

I've a Veethree rev counter fitted to a straight 6 petrol engine running from the coil. At tick over it reads correctly(380rpm), however on increase of rpm, it only raises to >1k. Fitted with a Pertronix solid state ignition. I've wired it directly to the coil and battery to eliminate any wiring faults and its just the same.

This is a replacement unit as the last became erratic.

Wiring as instructed +ign. -neg bat. S to -coil
Dips set to 1on, 2off, 3on

Any suggestions

Can you try it without the electronic ignition? I had a similar problem on a Landrover fitted with A Sparkrite system.

I'd thought that myself, was hoping I'd not have to do that. Guess it would sensible, to discount it.

Are you 100% that the dips switches are correct, looking at the back of the instrument I think your right but it might be worth trying reversing the pattern just in case they have fitted the dip switches upside down.

p.s. 380rpm tickover I bet that's a smooth engine.

Been there done that, at tick over counter reads 2.5k.

T/over; yes it does, lovely throaty rumble, and its getting deeper as it beds in more

does it do the same +- wired direct to the battery?

is it dependent on voltage coming from the coil, have you connected to the correct coil terminal?

can you rig up a magnetic trigger to rule out / in the tacho

not had to deal with rev counter issues for a while.

electronic ignition has been around long enough now i would have thought all rev counters would be ok with it, id normaly say stuff it and wire it up to the phase tap on the alternator but i bet your running dynamo

SORTED

Turns out the Pertronix module needs a clean + supply. Their instructions say to connect + to the on the coil.
Just taken a feed directly from the battery to the module [leaving the gauge wiring as is] and it works

So I'll use the ignition feed to the coil to power a relay, so I can get a supply directly from the battery, but only when the coil is energised.

It gets better. Runs better, hard to put my thumb on it, it just does, pickup is better, sounds different, not as raspy, quieter yet deeper, and you can here transmission whine under 30mph now
