Respirator / Mask Recommendations

Hi;

I will be spraying JOTUN JOTAMASTIC 87 Epoxy Primer which in a well ventilated area only requires an A2/P2 mask. I will also be spraying U-POL Gravitex thinned with cellulose thinners and may move on to cellulose paints, no plan at this stage to use 2K paints.

I have been using a 3M 4255 for welding, these are A2/P3 but should be disposed of after a month of use.

Can someone recommend either maintenance free masks or a reasonably priced respirator with replaceable filters for painting and poss welding combined? Or in this forum just painting.

The 3M one you have been using, A2/P3 is rated higher than A2/P2, so should be fine. Main thing is that it seals well round your face.

If you want a better mask, you can buy a half mask by Moldex fitted with ABEK1 rated canisters and P2 or P3 filters, from Farmchem. They do small medium or large and disposable or repleaceable filter ones.

Note they key phrase "well ventilated area". This basically means open air, not in a garage. So it's worth going to a better mask I say. make sure you look after the mask, don't wear it hanging round your neck or leave it on the bench. Keep it in a sealed bag.

Farchem no longer seem to stock them but I have found them here , here and on Amazon here
Before I buy one have you used this mask and is it any good? The additional particulate filter fitting seems a little flimsy? Any other recommendations for an A2 / P2 mask?

As an update just found the from a company called Dust Mask Direct works out at £35.76 for the Mask, ABEK1 Filter, P3 Particulate Filter and the Particulate Filter Holder, VAT and delivery.

I use the sundstrom full face mask but you can get a SR 100 half mask for about £25 and then you just need one particle and one organic gas filter which are about £12 for the pair. I lucked out as the company I work for were upgrading to a single combined filter so I got a heap of the filters for free.

I actually bought a new mask from Farmchem the week before last. I use the splashproof particulate filter holders and they are fine. Arrived within 2 days of my order.

What about a gas mask? An Avon S10 respirator to be exact? Can be picked up for about £30. I have used them for years. Great for spraying or sand blasting or even chimney sweeping. Just cover lenses with some plastic film when sand blasting or they get ruined!
you can buy sealed new filters cheap enough. Good enough for NBC.
They never fog up - are reasonably comfortable and protect eyes as well of course.
I have sprayed all sorts of nasties and not even a whiff comes through!
All sorts of different filters available as well.

You should also be a able to pass your Annual Personal Weapons Test whilst wearing one (handed my S10 in about 8 years ago when I de-kitted!!!)

Mmm when I looked I couldn't seem to find them? Just did a search again and pulled this up.

Anyway after much scratching of the head (as I could get the Moldex 8000 elsewhere I compared the Moldex 7000, 8000 and the 3M 7500 in the end I bit the bullet and ordered a 3M 7500, a pair of P3 Filters and ABEK1 Filters, as well as the holders for the P3 Filters. All in all cost me about £45.31 from Park Royal Timbers Ltd via Ebay.

The Moldex 8000 with ABEK1 and P3 Filters from Amazon was £34.39 here clearly cheaper but I preferred the 3M TBH

When it arrives and once I have used it i'll post back my thoughts?

The 3M should be a good mask. Please do give your feedback, I'm interested in if you feel the P3 filters restrict breathing at all, I went for P2 for that reason.

I use a respirator with replaceable filters by NORTH by Honeywell. I bought my mask from Abatix.com and they have different Gas and Vapor Cartridges/filters to put on the mask for added protection and safety.

There are tons of options and a lot of people will suggest what they think is the "best." I won't say this is best because I haven't tried every product out there lol. The North mask from Honeywell at Abatix is extremely comfortable and reasonably priced. I like that there is a welding adapter and interchangeable filter options.

Just to report back, I have been using the 3M 7500 with a vapour filter and the P3 filters and I don't notice any breathing restrictions whatsoever.
