Resizing Photos

Yet another daft question from yours truly.
I have some photos that I want to email but they are currently around 3-5Mb in size which is way to big to send (can't even transfer the folder they're in on my wireless network without crippling it).
Does anyone know of any application I could use to reduce the file size of pictures so I could do this?

Photo shop, or photo deluxe, thumbs plus, Ashampoo photo commander, there must be loads more

Thanks Paul, I've got three or four different progs on my pc but the only one that comes close is Picasa and ideally I'd like to resize without having to email. Not heard of photo deluxe, thumbs plus or Ashampoo photo commander.
I'll Google these and see what happens.

Xnview is nice and simple and free. Photoscape is brilliant and free.

I use IrfanView, nice viewer with some editing. Has batch moode that can convert entire directories, change format and compression ratio.

I use the resizer powertoy from microsoft, it's beautiful in its simplicity.

All it does is pop a 'resize' option on the right-click menu, when you right click on an image file, from there you simply select the resolution you want.

It'll work anywhere, including in the middle of attaching an image to an email, or uploading to the forum etc.

Very useful indeed!

It's probably the easiest way. I use it a lot, you can select a whole block of files - right click - resize.

OK, I'm a Mac user, but doesn't Windows have a 'share' button. If I look at a nice pic that I want to mail, I just say 'share to mail' and a mail window pops up asking do I want large, med or small mail size. Click small, put the address in and it's gone! I never actually resize the original at all. I don't use a special app. Yes, I know it's a Mac, but the operating systems do roughly the same things don't they?

XP and Vista both have this feature, you right click the picture file. then send to mail recipient, then a box pops up and offers to resize your photos or leave them as is, the original is untouched.

I must try the powertoys, used to use them on W98 I seem to remember. I tried the right click & email etc but I don't always want to mail there & then.
I've found that in Picasa you can export to another folder & in doing so you have the choice of reducing the filesize.
However I'm still having a look around the other progs as there's always more then one way to skin a cat as they say

The Picasa route works but is un-necessarily laborious, plus it takes quite a while to open the program. Irfanview is very much faster and has a lot of functions for re-sizing especially if you use the batch feature. Takes a while to set up the output folders though. Powertoys is the quickest but with less functionality, perfect for simple re-sizing. If you have photoshop then 'save for web' is truly excellent IMO.

Tig Paul - That's a new one on me! I always drag & drop images into emails. That way is very cool just let it insert the image into a blank email and drag the attachment out onto the desktop.
