is apparently another name been given to the simple task of using ink, pen and paper and being used in the context of cyber crime and its effects.

Presumably if hacked, digital solutions/resets might take a while to get consumers out of problems.

A how to/instructions on written paper maybe a quicker solution, it makes sense in a way.

Surely however an SSD strapped to a keyboard with a main program that can't be altered, no connection to the internet or can be edited save for by a chosen few is a better way.

A lot of guys that work in engineering and information technology are well versed in this type of thing, and spend a lot of time and effort designing systems and processes to be incredibly resilient, high availability and fully redundant with all sorts of emergency contingency planning.

And then a lot of time and effort redesigning the systems to remove all of the above after the project budget has been "reviewed" or the security found too "restrictive".....

IME, if you highlight the points of failure or potential risks, you are labelled as "difficult" or not a team player and usually overruled.
If you implement it as requested and it goes wrong, you are at fault for not mitigating the risks and raising awareness.
However, they will often happily pay a large fee for a specialist consultant to come in and tell them exactly the same thing.

Makes one somewhat salty and cynical after a while.
Ask anybody in that field, I’m pretty sure they will all tell you the same story.
Makes you think just how much of a knife edge our entire society is balanced on.

Ditto if you voice not connecting something to "the cloud" or a cloud service or scan because you want to add a layer of defence with perimeter devices because you dont trust the maker of the device and their cloud to get it right.
Then your out of date, antiquitated, and not up to date with modern agile development for not punching ruddy great holes in the firewall or not having one at all.
Then, go ask the cloud provider for a full software bom with versions installed on their systems and nobody can answer, yet still people try to shoehorn them into spaces that mandate this level of tracking and detail.

Most of the systems we supply are not allowed to be connected to the wider web, or have any usb devices used. We quite often have to provide a disaster recovery strategy that entails us having a completely blank pc and needing to reinstall the various bits of software to make it all work as it should from scratch, using physical media.

It’s quite a big thing in pharma industry and other regulated industries (nuclear, aerospace etc)

I've been deeply involved with disaster recovery at a few major companies (utilities, banking, international manufacturing).

One thing I soon learned, some areas of the business get a lot of attention and in depth planning but if you ask about something not on the "approved" list it gets dismissed as not relevant.

Best just hope if there's a disaster it happens in a part of the system that management put onto the "approved" list.

In my corporate job I was involved in disaster recovery and business continuity planning, all the way up to a black start (restart following total grid failure) I suggested printing them out and the "senior leader" asked why

I think I managed to keep a straight face as I pointed out in the event of total grid failure his laptop may have charge but I doubt it will be connected to the server or cloud

I was in HF last year and the computer cash registers all died.
They pulled out the old roller credit card machines and started hand printing
the info for the reciept.
Works well if your CC still has embossed numbers, some of mine do not.

There's a blast from the past! I still have my course notes from the early 90's that also features Omega (ONS) (installed so we could find our way to the Falklands in the 1980's). That too was decommissioned!

Coincidentally, we also carried 2 sextants on board. I remember when they too were removed and they stopped teaching navigators how to use them.
