Replacement Panels - Remove Primer they come in first?

I need to stick a couple of new wings on my car as the ones on it have rusted pretty badly, they are pattern parts but i don't think the prep done previously on them was up to much hence why they have rotted with relatively little road miles under their belt.

So i've got some new ones but i'm unsure whether to strip off the primer that they come in before epoxying them? as i see it, this primer would be the achilles heel if it were to get chipped somehow as its probably going to allow rot the spread under it alot more than the lechler epoxy stuff

Yes, the paint on new panels is to protect them in storage. Strip back to bare metal and etch prime.

Sounds like the old cataphoretic coating which though messy, will easilly wash off with gun wash thinners

the electro coating is good stuff and i would leave it

I always rub it down and prime over it and never had any problems.

Pretty much, if you can wash it off with thinners, its unstable as a substrate. Just my opinion. I would therefore wash it off, scrape it off or D.A it out. Then on with a quality etch (old skool) epoxy (modern way forward it seems)

This is how ive sorted mine out, some producers of replacement panels put cheap paint on others use the good stuff, the price usually reflects this. Iv painted on top of the good stuff and had no problems with it.

As said test it with some good quality thinners.

the primers are usualy right peely and rough , electro coat would be nice and smooth and no peel to talk of

well i gave it a decent rub last night with some thinners and nothing came off, so it looks half decent, so a bit undecided as to whether i shoudl strip it all off before chucking some epoxy on it

Epoxy will no doubt be the better product to use, especially if its for a sill or similar, then apply the usual 2k stonechip.

Perfectly suitable as a substrate then. I would give it an agressive flat back (80grit) but not necessarily take it all off then epoxy.

Whats the real point in using epoxy if the lower coating isn't as good ?
