Replacement body cappings

As you know I have just refurbished the rear door of my Land Rover Defender. Whilst the door was off I decided it was a good time to replace my body capping's with galvanized ones. I have had these for a while now just did not get round to fitting them. Took a few photos as I know you all like photos.







As you can see old ones were not in great shape!

Used a bottle jack to lift roof.


Like the look of galvanized steel so not going to paint them, hope to get a few more galvanized bits to add like rock sliders etc,

One of the areas Land Rover let standards slide when they no longer galvanised them. The further you go back the better built Land Rovers were. The first 50 Land Rovers were built with galvanised chassis and all alumnium bulkheads. It's been down hill ever since.

Aren't you tempted to do the upright corner cappings to complete the look?

They look good. Where did you get them from? I'm after some for my 90.

Got them of ebay but believe land rover now also make them again galvanized. If you are replacing them make sure you have plenty of pop rivets think it takes about 35.

Yeah you are right about the first 50 land rovers, if you have one give me a shout

Think I will respray the defender in the near future but will leave the galvanized bits as is.

I had a 1951 landrover with an ally bulkhead, apparently they ran out of pressed ones so for a while made them on an angle frame.

I have a 1986 90V8CSW. I think this was the last year Landrover fitted galv body cappings (but am happy to be corrected on that), and mine are still fine to this day - unlike the bulkhead / outriggers / front chassis arms / rear crossmember etc etc

Rover only made 48 of the planned 50 pre-production Land Rovers. The steel framed fabricated bulkheads on these vehicles (also the first 1500 production vehicles) were probably panelled with Duralumin as the bodywork was made from Duralumin. Production vehicle bodywork was made from Birmabright.
A pressed steel bulkhead was subsequently fitted, the die broke 4 times during the time this bulkhead was fitted, to keep the assembly line moving a fabricated bulkhead was fitted - steel framed with birmabright panels, commonly known as the aluminium bulkhead.
