Replaced MIG Gun and have gas leaking out of Regulator (Pics)...please help :(

Guys, sorry if this is not the place for this, but I am a newbie to welding and recently tried to replace my MIG gun, gas line etc.....problem is: I connected the gas line (white, shown in the pic), and when I turn the gas on, I get gas blowing out of what appears to be a leak valve -see pic (sorry of this is not the correct term) The gas does not leak where I put the line into the connector attached to the back of the welder.

I don't understand why the gas is leaking out of this valve. My tank will be empty before I know it at this rate.

seems like you may need a new regulator, doesn't look like you could have done anything to cause that fault

What chomps by butt, it that the valve in the gun started leaking, but before that happened, it welded just fine. So I figured, let me replace the gun, which is what I just did, and now this. Seems odd, but I guess crap happens. So you don't think the gas line could be blocked somehow and the gas is forced out the valve for some reason?....sorry, I am trying to compute this event.... :|

no nothing to do with gas line blocked, if it was it would happen each time you turned the gas on but didn't weld as the valve in the gun blocks the gas flow when not in use, you could take the regulator off remove the part leaking and try cleaning it a little lube maybe in case it has become stuck if that doesn't work I think your regulator is shot

I am going to get another regulator tomorrow and give it a try.

Another question if I may: I am busy connecting the new gun to the welder. However, the wire colors are different. I know I have a 50% chance of getting it right, but I also have a 50% of getting it wrong, so I figured I would rather ask since I don't want to blow it up

See pic of the new Gun and a pic of the old Gun wires. The old gun had YELLOW and BLACK wires. The new gun has BLUE and BROWN wires.

Which wires go where please? The yellow looks like it could be a ground wires as it terminates to the back of the welder case and the black wire terminates at the front of the case...perhaps a switch...not sure.

Again, any help would be appreciated.

The blue and brown would go where the old smaller wires went. Polarity won't matter as it just runs to the trigger.

Are you sure that's a port for another line and not the vent?
if the reg works fine with the braided vynil hose as in the bottom picture, but the output hose is still attached to the reg in the top picture that makes me think your trying to stick a pipe up a vent

Sorry i misread your post for one moment i thought you were trying to connect the torch directly into the blow off valve

A safety valve I think, looks an OLD reg, don't they recommend changing every 4 years.
Do I see PTFE tape on thread ? the seal should be on the face \ taper not on thread if either face is damaged replace reg or return bottle,
+ clip on pipe would be good.
As Scott says small wires are not polarity concious it is only a normally off switch So it cant tell

IIRC the small bore pipe is held into the nut with a small metal collet. If this has slipped off the end the pipe will no longer hold pressure. If the nut hadn't been fully torqued up it would not have taken much tension to pull the pipe out of the collet. Take it apart and check the integrity of the collet.
Alternatively is the gas escaping alongside the pipe or out of the back of the nut? If the latter then removing it, winding on some fresh thread/PTFE tape and retightening it should fix the problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I ended up replacing the regulator which resolved the gas escaping from the valve issue. The little nut with collet: well I cracked it while trying to wrench it down Ordered new fittings and while I am waiting, I managed to find an in-line fitting at the local hardware store and got the lines connected without and leakes I will probably take hell on the site if I posted a pic of it, but it works!

Tested the welder, and it works just fine.
