Not sure where to put this. so move if needed thanks.
Ok I picked up a old olympus 150 arc welder yesterday, I used it twice for a check and then it no longer worked. I opened it up and found mountains of rust that I cleaned off, it still refused to work so I shoved a meter across the windings, the primary side is two sets of seperate windings ( so it looks like ) joined in the middle, I get around 10 Ohms across the ends so they seem ok, Across the secondary also two sets of seperate windings joined in the middle I get open circuit, on closer inspection I found under the tape that covers them hides a join, the actual windings seem to be of aluminum and they look like they were joined with a solder of some sorts. This has degraded and the two windings are no longer joined, hence the open circuit.
I have no intention of scrapping the thing if I do not need too, so I need to rejoin the two windings. My dilemma is knowing the following.
1. would they actually have been soldered together and if so with what solder and how.
2. Would it be possible to clamp the ends together with some sort of brass or copper clamp
3. What kind of tape and varnish is used to cover these windings.
4. Anyone know where to get a book on rewinding transformers that is more practical than theoretical.
Hopefully this image is clickable and will show you the parts i am talking about.
