Repairing shock tower on 1987 vw golf...advice?

The shock tower on my 1987 vw golf is developing rust around the seams where it is welded to the unibody. I figure if I can grind away the rust and reweld around the seam I should be fine. Any advice for what wire , gas setting, or any advice for useing the borrowed MIG welder in my posession?

have you got a pic of the offending item?

I doubt you'll be able to just remove the rust and re-weld will likely need a plate of some sort as the rust is likely to go further than you think

Agree with philsmin, grinding back rust and attempting to rebuild the surface with weld is not really going to work, unless the lack of a picture is not letting us judge correctly.
