Repainting an 84 Porsche 944

Morning everyone
I was looking for answers to a few questions and know this has probably been asked before!
I have a Guards red 944 that has had a previous crap respray and needs doing again.
I have sanded down through the odd area and got Red paint then grey primer before it went back to red, I presume that the second coat of red was original? Underneath the original red is a white primer.

Ok first question: Do i really need to go back to bare metal or would sanding down to the original primer be ok and would it be ok to do this over a longer period or will moisture get in (the car is in a garage).

What primer would people recommend and what top coat? also where from. I have access to an air fed mask system, I also have a friend who is a panel beater and he can offer some advice but I am keen to hear other peoples. He is also away for quite a bit and I am keen to get started on the prep (he can Spray the final coats).

I have done a lot of work on the wings so they will go to bare metal, I have about six tins of Parweld Galvanising spray and was wondering if that would do instead of etch primer before presumably putting an Epoxy primer over that.
On a plus side the crap paints sands of very easy and I have a DA sander anyway.

Quite a lot here so many thanks in advance for any advice.

if the paint thats on it now is sound with no crazing /peeling /flaking you can sand whats there and paint over it , people like to bare metal them as then theres no hidden nastys that way .you could always strip any known dodgy areas to be sure theyre good , so maybe sills , lower doors and arches

i wouldnt reccomend the galv spray myself ...either etch or epoxy on the bare bits then 2k high build primer and 2k top coat

That is the route i will probably take with the paint. This is amazingly a 944 with rust free sills and I have coated them internally with Dinitrol. For the wings can I Epoxy straight to bare metal?

yes epoxy is perfect onto bare metal

TVM, a lot of folk are saying use Lechler, any recommendations?

Would it ok to prime it and then paint a few days later?

the epoxy doesnt soak up water ,but high build can . a few days in a dry warm garage will be fine its when people leave them outside that problems can start

bare steel either needs etch or epoxy ..epoxy being the better choice

just on a side note as you seem to have the primer side kinda sorted........If you have been bashing down three or four coats of paint with a DA it might be a good idea doing a chunk of hand blocking now as you surface is bound to be anything but flat right now.

Bare steel needs primer yes - epoxy is the best choice of primers. What it doesn't need is a etch primer that is for stuff like aluminium.

yeah sound advice there , da sanders will make it ripply

a good trick is to wet the panel with panel wipe and look along it into the light , any ripples that show now will show in the paint..and use lots of guide coat when sanding

Haven't really used the DA yet, might just see how I go the old fashioned way. That should keep me busy lol!!!
