Rent or Rent free decision

I've just had my invoice from BOC for the coming year rent on the "Y" size bottle of 5% argon. I'm on the Volkszone offer and the rent is £46. The fills are about £30 I think.
I keep hearing about these rent free accounts so I thought I'd have a look at what I could pay if I went for say the Adams rent free bottle, and to be fair, I'm not convinced that at nearly £60 a fill that going rent free would be such a good idea. Its so close cost wise that its probably not worth the bother of changing to the rent free job.
I use up two bottles a year so really, I'm not a big user but maybe someone can give me some plus on why I aught to change.

I use Adams Gas & the last time I changed one it was £36 (£30 +£6 vat) the deposit was £50. Look on the web site & they have a fair number of agents around. I don't know how the bottle size compares though, this was for a 9 litre bottle, 137 bar.

Edit, just looked at the web site, based on 2x20L bottles a year, better off where you are!

I take it all the prices you quote are including VAT?
If you go through 2 Y sized bottles each year then it looks like the equivalent would be the 20l trade gas, as I believe they are the same size (20l), and importantly they are also filled to 200 bar. The other bottles are only filled to 137 bar, making them very expensive and they certainly will not show you any savings!

The refill for the 20l 200 bar is actually £58 + VAT, which totals at £69.60.
Assuming there is an outlet for Adams gas somewhere near you - if you start using couriers it really gets expensive - then ignoring your cylinder deposit you'll be paying almost £140 per year for the same amount of gas which is currently costing you a total of £106 including rent as well as fills.

On this basis you're on the best deal you can get, without even considering having a few quid tied up in a deposit.

I took out a rent free Argon/CO2 mix today. Roughly £70 bottle deposit and £70 refill including VAT. What to go for depends on how often you are going to need a refill. For me I don't have a garage at the moment so no projects on the go until I build one. Refill more than once a year and you are better off with the rental deal.

But alot cheaper than Adams Gas as for 20L Pure Argon/Sheilding Gas It is £34.99 for the gas And £80.00 deposit plus vat with delivery at £14.95 all plus Vat you can have one at your door at a reasonable price and you dont loose money with rentals

That's where my argon came from and they are by far the cheapest I could find, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. And I got a free crayon.

yeah, they were the cheapest i could find too, got myself a decent auto darkenin helmet from there as well for about 35 quid.

I put some numbers into a spreadsheet the other day. Im looking at argon only -

yr1(1) means year one, first fill, etc.

so far as i can see, the only way the rent free work out cheaper than the volks deal (on argon) is if you buy a rent free and dont use it for years?

The main cost with them seems to be the delivery. And that, when you want the bottle refilled, you have to pay 2x the charge (1x to get the fresh bottle, and 1x to return the old one)

Mine was 10 year right to use cylinder for £80 and £24 per refil. Sabre Gas Argon 10l Bottle 200 bar. So if you are local to Rayleigh Elmdale welding is the one.

you do have to bare in mind later down the line you will get your £80 back for the cylinder deposit with wg
