renault clio rear wheel bearing replacement

I know they all say dont try it yourself take it to the garage. But well you know.!

Could it be done at home in the shed with a bloody huge vice as a press ?

ps: i hear the circlip is a pain in the ****. Anyone any experience of this ?

my peugeot partner rear bearing went it was a complete hub 80 quid . had to take it off using a puller the bearings and seals were 50 quid so it was hardly worth spending the time on .unless your in no rush and skint and like that sort of job

havent done one on a clio, but i always take it apart then take the hub down the local garage and borrow the press then chuck em a tenner, saves a few quid. some come out really easy some dont, just depends. you can always run a line of weld round the inner race of the bearing to heat it up and then air chisel em out. just remember to wear glasses coz bits of flying bearing hurt!

Did one at the weekend, took just over 5t to move so no way on the vice, clips not too tricky to get out.

Use a punch to remove the centers of the bearings. Run a bead of weld around the outers and allow to cool. This shrinks the outer race and gives a rib to use a punch on. drive out the outers, clean up the bore.
Once the bearings out of the hub. Freeze the bearing over night but dont tell your lass its in the ice box. Warm the hub in the oven to about 120C. the bearing will pop in with the minimum of effort. Tap it down with alli or brass punch then refit the circlip.
Should be able to do this without the need for a press.

I had a tight bearing to fit a while ago away from home, no access to a press, oven, or fridge but had a small gas blow lamp / soldering iron in the tool box.

A bit of head scratching, off to a nearby B&Q plumbing dept for a can of pipe freezer spray, wrapped the bearing in a bit of old toweling, stuck it in a polythene bag then attacked it with the spray.

Warmed the housing up whilst waiting for it to freeze up out of the bag and it tapped in perfectly.

Note of caution, it was that cold I think it would have stuck to my fingers

Out of curiosity, the next time I come across removing a problem outer race I may give the same method a try.
