Removing zinc with naoh.

I need to weld some nuts, so I've soaked these in a sodium hydroxide solution for a couple of days.

They certainly "look" different. I'm wondering if there is an instant zinc test that I can do? Maybe hit them with the mapp torch for a while and see if they smoke?

Drop one into brick/ hydrochloric acid, if it fizzes there is still zinc on the nut , the gas is hydrogen. the amount produced won't be dangerous but will still ignite if you get too close with a flame

Put one in a flame....Zinc burns green (i think)....i should google it because I cant remember

Green is copper I think.

They have alreaddy started to rust, so I'm thinking I'm probably good (I added an excess of naoh)

Zinc burns with a light blue flame, possibly with a hint of green, giving off a plume of white zinc oxide.
