Surprising capacitor.Thanks guys, much appreciated.
I detached the wires poking with a very small screwdriver. Worked a treat.
Now, the next question. I was watching a bloke on youtube, "restoring" the same drill, a B&D D720. His one had exactly the same trigger switch, except his one also had a large capacitor wired in as well. I think they were attached into the grey wires holes. It was very difficult to tell as the plank kept getting his hands in the way. So the question is, what is the purpose of the capacitor? Does it smooth out the trigger action?
YesSurprising capacitor.
Is your got the Double square to indicate it is double insulated?

Yes, then it is part of the interference suppression system and part of the double insulation set up.
Was fitted from build when B&D went double insulation.I should think the capacitor was just for suppression to stop it interfering with TVs and radios, probably added on later models
Don't fix it.Thanks chaps that all makes a good deal of sense.
Here's the final question. See below, the slightly later drill, an H68V, also double insulated.
As you can see, its also got a large capacitor, which has two black wires which seem to be the same as the D720, but its also got an extra white wire. Yes I know, I could take it apart, but I dont quite trust myself to get it back together properly, so the question is where would this go to?
The white wire will but a short on and blow ther plug fuse when the motor case goes live, in a fault.I'm not sure what you mean. There is no earth from the main plug, only Live and Neutral.
Are you saying, it only attaches to the motor casing?
The reason I asked was that the beigey drill at the top has a sticky variable speed trigger and the variable speed one out of the H68V will fit in the beigey handle okay, and I thought it maybe easier to find the latter trigger, and fit that. I just wanted to make sure I would get the wiring sorted okay.
