Removing the remains of a fibreglass hammer handle

I've done plenty of wooden ones but never a fibreglass one. Anything I should look out for, aside from the obvious not breathing bits in nor licking it?

I usually drill wooden ones with an auger, would a masonary bit be more suitable for fibreglass?

Apart from the above safety concerns.

Cut the shaft as close to the head as possible.
Drill the 4 corners.
Then punch/press out.
Clean the hole, I use running water when I do this.
Then simply refit to a new shaft.

In my experience there will be little fibreglass in the the actual head
It's mostly just epoxy resin
I just drill it out with a standard metal bit and use an old knackered wood chissel to chip the rest of the epoxy out

What are you putting back in there? It has been my experience on sledgehammers that the eye of fibre-handled heads can be a lot rougher and more jagged than is perhaps desirable if a wooden handle is to be used. So it might need a bit of smoothing after removal.

Not been an issue for the 20+ fiberglass hammers I have re-shafted.

I was planning on rehandling it with a stubby wooden handle. It's a 7lb head I think, useful for driving in pegs when shuttering. Square one end and cylindrically rounded on the other.

I detest hammers which have fibreglass handles, well the bigger ones (7lb, 14lb) to be fair to the smaller hammers.
honestly the pain you can receive from the handle through you hands and arms is horrendous. Put one guy on light duties for two weeks! I’m not sure if it’s vibration or resonance that can travel through the shaft but I know it chuffin hurts!
stick with the wooden shafts if you can, we had them banned at work because the heads like to skidaddle when people miss

Only upside is Muppets struggle to break them.

No.
As I have never fitted a new fiber glass shaft.
I have always used a wooden one.

The heads are exactly the same choose what handle goes on them.

We produce more sledge hammers on fibreglass than we do on hickory, and we don't even sell fencing mauls or 28lb sledges on hickory

We reshaft fibre glass hammers and axes, the sledge handles come from the US and the hand hammer handles from Israel. It's the resin that holds them that is special, it's an epoxy made for the job.

I’ll have to look into zoro, not something I’m familiar with

Alternatively I can take the hammer to Odell in Stony Stratford. It’s an old fashioned hardware store with floor to ceiling wooden draws behind the counter.

If I asked for a hammer handle wedge, he will ask metal or what, what size

To anyone that might care: I prefer wooden wedges, they make drilling out broken handles easier.

im sure there is a wooden wedge that goes in but closes into itself I remember my dad showing me when I was a kid

kept me busy for hours trying to replicate it
