removing rust from gasless wire

i have a virtually unused reel of gasless wire that i will need to use shortly.

it is a bit rusty in parts and although the welds do not need to be perfect as its nothing structural just a one time jig, id like to do it as best ad i can.

is there anyway ti get the rust off the wire

not really itll be the top few layers you could try unwinding it. trouble is the rust dust plays havoc with the liner and feed rollers

Unwind until the rusty wire has gone, if you use it rusty it will damage your liner not to mention contamination of weld

will unwind it and see how deep the rust is. May just buy a new reel if i have to which is annoying as in only have about 15 40mm fillets to do

Run some through a piece of wire wool held round the wire with your fingers, if it just leaves tarnished spots behind clip some wire wool over the wire before the feed rollers using a peg.

that is a good idea. Will try that when i get home

just had a look at it and its had it. Rust penetates right done through over half the reel and the wire is just breaking off in small bits. Will pick a new reel up tomorrow when i get grinding discs and flap wheels

What size reel is it? If it's only one of the small 0.45kg rolls I would bin it,and buy a fresh one.

Ir was the larger of the small reel but its not worth using even for an emergency. Will pick a new reel up in Halfords tomorrow

Screwfix are cheaper for flux cored wire. £18 for 900 grams Vs £20 for 700 grams at Halfrauds. In future I would keep the wire in the house. That's how I keep my sticks nice and dry. At the moment the whole welder is in the kitchen waiting for my 'new' garage to be erected in the back garden.

screwfix have just told me that they do not currently stock items for welding although they will be doing so shortly, plus i have just paid 10 quid something for a reel of flux core that is more than plenty for what i need to do with it

I'll have to check with my local Screwfix as I was about to go and buy a 5Kg roll of the 0.8mm gas wire. Although it's the same price as Halfrauds and Tool Station the latter is closer, but doesn't stock tips or shrouds. Screwfix it is then.

when i went in this morning to get a few bits i got a new pair of gloves and they said they are returning to the welding stuff but haven't started stocking it again yet. Probably be a few weeks the way he was talking. Showed me a web page with a few reels of hobby sized wire, some 6013 packs and a few regs and hoses
