removing heavy rust

hi there,

yet again I'm in need of your advice.

i have an old lock which has gone quite rusty, only the casing and shackle is rusty, and i was wondering if there is any type of spray or chemical i can soak it in, i don't mind waiting awhile for it to work fully. i don't think WD40 is strong enough.

i don't really wanna go the route of using electrolysis to remove the rust (as I've seen on here)

any suggestions?

Soak overnight in a 5-10% citric acid in water solution- for accelerated rust removal buzz the lock in the solution in a plastic container in the microwave (advice taken at your own risk! may damage microwave).

I have a cheap supermarket microwave.

metal in a microwave ? Iv put small metal dish in a microwave when i was a child and the microwave went bang and was nackered .......

That's why I've said its at your own risk! I have a cheapie Tesco £17 Chinese made microwave and it still heats my food OK after helping to rapidly de-rust some several lots of small items (brackets, bolts/ small parts) in citric acid solution.

Make sure the metal item is in a plastic container and covered with solution, or just leave overnight at room temperature if you are worried.

an recommend this stuff, an overnight soak and the job is done, also great for removing mill scale.

jenolite is also effective but a bit of a hassle on complex shapes.
