Removing a broken broken stud remover

Had a brake disc/pad fall apart the other night on my van
So bought new discs/pads, went to fit them today , snow/ice on the ground and thermometer reading -5, nice weather to work in

Managed to round off one of the bolts holding the disc onto the hub part

Used a broken stud extractor tool on it, and yep you guessed it, that snapped

Tried welding a bit of a rod on the top of the bolt but that didn't work either, as it's recessed and you can't really get in

So have been trying to drill the head off, but obivously as the extractor is hardened steel it's not really going anywhere


Here is the bolt in question near the top in this pic, with a wee hole in the head

Anyone got any suggestions?

Can build up a pad of weld to improve access if needed and then weld a nut on although looks there's enough room to weld a nut directly to the remains
Looks there's enough access for the chisel and hammer method too but in either case i'd hit it hard with a hammer and punch first

Cut as far through the disk bell as you can with an angle grinder then thrash it off with a big hammer, smash it to pieces. The wheel studs locate it so you can snap the little stud with no problems.

Irvin / Machine Mart do some rounded nut removers - sort of reverse stud extractor. Internal flutes to dig in and grip the outside. But I'd be applying a few heat/cool cycles first to break the corrosion grip.

But as mentioned, use a nut that allows you to get a socket into the recess onto it, and weld inside the nut to the bolt head and allow to cool. Heat of welding will assist in loosening the corrosion grip.

you could try a masonry bit to drill it out steady pressure and lots of coolant there are good at drilling harden steel

Thanks for the replies, why didn't I think of attacking it from the back myself

I just carefully drilled it out from the back, using a vernier caliper to make sure i didnt go in too deep

The professional way of removing broken taps etc is to find a engineering company that does Spark Eroding
This is a machine that burns the broken tap /Extractor out, once removed you just run a tap down the hole and it is as good as new
