Remove black goo?

My 1960's Mini has sound proofing felt bonded on to the panels with some sort of black tar like substance, I've used a razor scraper to remove the bulk of it but theres quite a bit of residue left.

I could probably take some thinners to it but it will probably get very messy, could you suggest anything else?

heat it up with a heat gun and scrape it off or decent tar and glue remover will get it off

I recently removed a load of similar gunk from the seatbox on my landy restoration.

I used a rag to soak the stuff with turps and then used steel wool to take it off. It was a little slow but it worked a treat!
