Been a very long time lurker, but have restarted a restoration project on my old (1996) A4. How have a million and one question (some of which answered using the search function) and some where I'm either going this way or that or sat on a fence...
Anyway my first question. So I've stripped down the rear of the car removed all the axle, tank & pipes so I can attack the rust on the car. So far I've found most of the rust spots. However I'm undecided if I should remove as much underseal as possible as there is some very thick under seal in some place and some area's which is going to be almost impossible to remove the underseal. So the question is would you try and remove the all the old stuff even if it's in good condition or remove regardless.
This is what I'm currently working on
Some of the good underseal
Some of the thicker stuff, and in some area's it's almost a 1 cm thick,
Second question is dealing with the rust, I'm trying to grind as much rust away as possible but some of it I cannot get to with a grinder so where do I go with these area's. I would love to just chop sections of the car out and reweld but that's not going to be possible with the tools that I have and I only have a basic welder and very basic welding skills. I'm also not planning on using the car if it's raining and when finished it will be stored in a heated garage so I'm hoping what rust I cannot remove does not spread too aggressively over the many years to come.
Rust between the two seam's where a spot welder has been used. Also I was planning to seld this back up good or bad idea, as I have not broken the spot welds.
Very rusty exhaust mounting point & chassis section.
Inside of the mount is just as bad
Final question is what to do about the pitted rust, will a rust converter work?
