• Prohibit the use of handheld emery cloth on lathes
• Prevent access to dangerous moving parts of the lathe
• Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by workers did not create risk of being injured by, or drawn into, the lathe
• Undertake a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for the lathe, or establish a safe operating procedure

It is sad that a life is lost but training is the key, it should be instilled Into you .
Common sense is dwindling I think in society, I was always taught, no loose clothes, hair tied back and the ultimate one

Never used a lathe but have managed to get gloves caught in drills before. I can only imagine the damage a big or even small lathe can do hence why I'll never buy one.

i do it even though at college was told not to i put some cloth on the bed though to stop grit knacking the bed i did once get a bruised thumb as the emery wrapped round it

I love some of their solutions for using emery cloth on the lathe. Like clamping a piece in the toolholder. That is then worn out in seconds. Then you have to stop and move it, then go again. No control of pressure or hitting certain areas. We was recommended a machine with an integrated brake and a Linisher type belt.
Useless piece of crap and it was a few grand

Having worked in a few, interviewed and walked around other manufacturing companies not a lot surprises me. Youtube is an eye opener too, this video is not graphic but anyone with some experience will wince a bit at this guys technique and what IMO is a near miss,

Terrible accident, but thats all, accident. Lathes are dangerous, yes, I dont agree that company should get the blame for workers mistake. We all know the dangers, people take risks!

There are safe ways to use emery in a lathe. I remember @doubleboost had a good video showing some ways.

What irritates me, if I remember correctly (I may be wrong, couldnt find any simple answer when I tried to check just now) me is that the fines of nearly £800k, I believe the family wont get a penny of that and would have to bring their own civil case for compensation?

Then if its a smaller company they will be bankrupted and put many peope out of work.

However if the employer really was at fault, it shouldnt be just fines but the management personally getting charged for it.

HSE need to be shot to be honest. Some of the silly rules are actually making work more dangerous. An example is arb tree climbing gear, theres no proper standards for friction hitches or mechanical hitches and thats unlikely to change any time soon - yet we must use two ropes and devices or hitches to these irrelevant standards from a different industry.
Our insurance wont pay a penny if we dont..

i witnessed someone - not an idiot, just busy and distracted - lose a fight with a tablesaw many years ago, never really heard the end result, think most of his digits were technically saved if not functional

Emery tape is fine, normal, as long as its safe, ie make sure you only grab the tape by the end with the tips of your fingers ready to let go if it snags.
The trouble is folk aren't taught properly around heavy machinery any more.
God help folk draw filing ......
