apparently they have a life span [for insurance purposes] of 5 years...

so the nice man in the boc shop told me ...

As you say, for insurance purposes in commercial use they have a life of 5 years, even if not used, but tend to be used a bit longer in DIY hands.

yea mine are getting used a bit longer than 5. x that by 8 and were about there

the only regulators i've had problems with are the new ones, never had a problem with any of my old regs they all work exactly as they should some of the new ones however if you can think of it it's gone wrong with them

Nowt to do with insurance. its the guidelines laid down in BCGA CP7 and GN7.

People can choose whether to follow it or not but you need to bear in mind if you have an accident and HSSE get involved, once they see you have been using unsafe kit they will come after you with the full weight of the law

Mine are chucked when the date is up. DIY or heavy workshop use makes no difference to them. The rubber diaphragm in side the reg is a perishable item in any environment. This is the reason for the date. Other gas equipment like blow pipes and cutting torches don't have dates because there is no perishable internals. Regulators are cheap and put under serious amounts of pressure. Why take the risk with them.

Offtopic but. Look at fitting Harris Gas savers, I did and can see the difference, in the little I use.

Always been wary of 'gas savers' and their ilk, but I'm fed up of seeing regs up at 20-25L/m as the bottles empty.

We used tamperproof flow restrictors to stop production welders turning up the flow to max (if it's set to max, I must be welding quicker = finish earlier )

The bit on the left replaces the flowmeter, the bit on the right is used to set the flow (with a gauge) then removed once set.
