Regular mild steel tube for an exhaust?

Hi all )


I have a truck with an Iveco 2.8 engine in it. I'd like to relocate the exhaust from just behind the cab, to the back of the chassis.
The steel used looks like mild, 2.5" or 3". So Im wondering, is it alright to just go to my local steel stockholders and pick up a length of mild tube and go at it? I think I might buy the bends off ebay. I dont care what it looks like, merely that it functions as it should. Thanks for reading.

Can't see why not, although if I was going to the effort of making an exhaust I think id be going stainless

i see what your saying, but, its for a truck, and the truck aint pretty lol, nor is it going to get pretty.
I'm thinking if it rusts after x amount of time or miles I'll just fab another.

Yeah but 5 mild versus 1 stainless, I know where my money would lie, truck isn't off the road for any time waiting on a new one etc

My car is 12 years old and still has the original mild steel exhaust. Stainless still use mild fittings so they are no great cure all.

Tube was quite cheap from the exhaust places.
I made the exhaust in my landy from a few lengths of straight tube from the local factors, it's all cut and
shut bends and it's been in use since 2003.

Will the truck outlive the exhaust is the question.... ;-)

One option is use alumnised mild steel / high temp paint

Exhausts rot from the inside

The pipes on my scooby have lasted 180k I changed the back box last year to stainless as it was cheaper than a genuine part in mild steel. Car is a 53 plate and it's had a hard life, had it from new.
Is the truck good for 10yrs plus and say 200k?
