I'm look for a straight reamer to ream out 5/8 tubing.
I'm currently making a rack for a Kawasaki ZRX.
the front and rear tubing the inside bore is a dead tight 1/2" and I can't get the 8mm Allen bolt head through it.
I cant buy a thinner wall tubing because there is a 1/2" tubing insert inside.
I only need to open it by 1mm. could use the drill but the ******s bite the tubing and as you know you cant tightened the vice to much as this will distort the tubing.the wall thickness I think is 1.6mm.
the question is ..is there such a thing as a straight reamer?? where can I get one fron(not to expensive. cheers. john

Look for straight shank parallel hand reamers, try Cromwell tools?

It's going to take some time to remove 1mm with a reamer. Can you not grind/machine the head down on the Allen bolt

You can get reamers,but they won't be cheap,and you'll have trouble putting one through a length of tube.
Can't you just reduce the size of the bolt heads?

Ive got loads of reams never use them , well on the odd occation , if you give me the size your after I will have a look see what we got and maybe sort you out for the cost of posting !

the reams are imperial, some are tapered, I have expanding reams and loads of straight reams take your pick hehehehe

The diameter of an 8 mm allen bolt head is around 12.8 mm, so a 13mm reamer should do.

Hello John,

Reamers are designed to remove just a couple of thou, so cannot be used instead of a drill.

You can try and put a zero or negative rake on your drill to stop it biting and catching. You can do that freehand on a bench grinder.

Going from 12,7 mm (1/2") to 13 mm is absolutely no problem with a reamer.

the drill size for reamers allowance is 0.2mm [.008 inch for soft materials 0.13mm [.005 inch for hard materials. a hand reamer would be better than a machine reamer as the hand reamer has a longer taper lead in than the machine taper which is shorter

Best solution is to use stainless allen bolts and have the heads skimmed a little,
Simple job would only take a couple of minutes,

s/steel allen bolts are almost 3 times the price Gordon..
s/steel for 50pc's= £24
zinc plated 100 pc's=£14.74.
anyway think I will alter the mounting brackets and use angle iron instead of tubing.I'm trying to keep cost down etc so that I can sell a bit cheaper.

Try screwfix for your cap screws, M8 x 25 A2 stainless are £10.13 for 50, I can buy them even cheaper from specialist fastener suppliers in bigger quantities, an easy way to reduce the diameter of the head without a lathe, is spin the screw in a drill and stroke it with a file.

Yes that would make a difference, buy a length of studding, weld a nut on the end, and turn it down to the dia you need.

Would a die grinder be the easiest solution? just go in a with say a 6m bit and work your way round slowly until the blt head slips in.

could do but 4 to a single rack x 10 at the moment.
the less time I have to work on them the better to keep cost down.
and I don't know if these will take off.theres a lot of interest but that is different from buying.
we will see how things go from there.
