So I have been trying to find a bit of teak for ages and given up.
Picked up a lump of iroko instead.
The size I need is about 550mmx300mm with a thickness of anywhere between 6mm-12mm.
The bit of iroko is about twice that size and about 35mm thick.
I have various wood working tools but no skills to use any of them.
I am thinking I should start by cutting out a bit I want roughly to size. I have a circular saw, jig saw, bench saw or a chain saw. What's best?
How do I get the thickness down? I have a planer/thicknesser but it looks like it will only go upto about 200mm wide.
If I cut the first part slightly over width then cut it down the middle I could run both bits through the thicknesser the the grain should match when I join them back together.
I dont know how to join them though. I could drill both sides and glue in some bits of round bar to use as dowels or I could have a go at making a tongue and groove using a router or maybe just a stepped joint with the router would hold together?
I dont have any wood glue or anything though and I would like to oil the wood afterwards which might break down a glued joint?
The other thing I thought of is mount a router on some linear rails and use it to thin the board down bit by bit. I have a hand held floor sander that should finish it off ok.
Or should I just chop it roughly to size and give it to somebody else to thin down?
