If the spring doesn't provide much pressure, consider stretching it to give more compression as it may have weakened over time.
I needed to do this with an old Record vice I refurbished.
.
I managed to get it to just under half a turn backlash which I think I can live with.
Out of curiosity how much backlash do others with these bigger vices get?
Wondering if I could maybe improve on it in the future as the vice isn't in it's final resting place just yet.
I had to make another washer at 11mm thick in the end. Had to make it from Corian as I didn't have any metal thick enough.
No lathe unfortunately. Do you think the Corian will hold up, it's pretty strong and I can't see it being put under much stress?
This is how it looked at first
and finally after getting it apart, it put up a good fight, the sheer weight of it was trouble enough! The threads on the screw and nut seemed okay to me.
The first aluminium washer was not thick enough so I had to take it all apart again and fit the thicker Corian washer. I will try stretching the spring if I do take it apart again.
Just a slight upgrade over my last vice
I'm chuffed to bits with it.
Cheers all.
Oh also is there meant to be any thing inside here, like a rubber or nylon bushing?
Can't see any thing on the diagram but seems as if something should go inside there?
