I have acquired a Record no5 Swivel vice with the base missing. It looks to be an old school before Irwin days one.
Before I resort to grinding the base flat and cutting a new bolt hole, does anyone have a base that will fit? I would like to keep it as a swivel vice to complement my fixed vice.

Yep, its why I am trying to find the base for it. It would be great if I can keep it as a swivel base. Otherwise as mentioned I am faced with taking a grinder to it and flattening the base and cutting a slot on the other side to bolt it down as a fixed vice.
Oh wow. I have a no.3 with the same base as that and didn't realise it was supposed to have a swivel base!
Will look forward to any responses or suggestions on this thread

Are the VS range the ones with that weird QR mechanism where you have to jiggle the leadscrew somehow to engage/disengage the nut? Looking at that, I'd be half tempted to use the old technique if you want that to be a swiveller. If you can tap that central hole in the base, you could fit a rod with a plate and a large wingnut underneath the bench. That mounting method was used on the 74's.
You'd probably get raped on price for a new replacement swivel base if you want to keep it original. It'd likely be way cheaper to buy another second hand vice.

Swivel vices are a pain in the rear when getting angry with something in it - you can never tighten the fixings up tight enough to stop it moving round.
Do you really need a swivel vice? Cut a matching notch in the other side and bolt it down. The vice is in good nick!

Fourteen here that I can think of offhand. In my defence though, three of those are todgers so don't really qualify.
I have a record no 6 on the bench already. I fancied a swivel one. But I will most likely just grind the base flat and cut a notch as you suggest and bolt it down.
What's the best way to cut a notch?

Well, I did think it was odd... It had one hole like Mr Shiney's and another clearly-aftermarket drilled hole.
So just two dirty big bolts through the bench
