Record Carpenters Vice, Counter sunk screws

Hello Every One
We have a couple of old Record Carpenters Vices that are being restored to original shape, can any one tell us what size are the countersunk screws are, to hold the wooden pad to the vice.
I have a good selection of countersunk screws but not the right ones, the nearest I've got are 8 mm that will enter 2/3 threads , the vices are about 50/60 years old ,so are bound to be British thread of some kind. Can You Help Me Please. desmo11225

5/16 UNC for the larger ones.
1/4 UNC for the smaller ones.

If it's somewhere near 8mm then 5/16 is likely it. Into a casting it would be normal to use a coarse thread so chances are 5/16 UNC as Mr Ardvark said.

Don't you have a local nuts & bolts supplier? 29p each is pricey - OK £2.99 might be cheap enough to get the job done but if you're having to buy ten and they do turn out to be Whit it can soon mount up. A decent local place will likely do then for pennies each and you'll be able to buy one to try it.

I'm lucky in that my local place is within walking distance of my workshop but most towns will have such a place.

Thank you Yellow Ardvark and ibrooks, the 5/16" countersunk screws arrived this morning and they worked fine the vice is back to normal , yes ibrooks ,for a very long time we had a
company round the corner supplying us with fixings of all kinds , they even had boxes of odds and ends and would fish through them for you, and fix you up for no charge but they've gone and we miss them , like all good things they come to an end. Thank's again . All the Best desmo11225

Still remember asking Mum & Dad to nip in to my local place if they were going shopping with an example set-screw for the rear lights for the Mini - I wanted 6 of them in stainless. I got a call saying they could get them but the minimum order was for a hundred of them.

"OK - how much will a hundred cost me?"

"I didn't ask and we've come into town and are sat at the cafe having lunch"

"Well can you call back in on the way home and ask - give me a call from there and I can say yes or no straight away"

Couple of hours later the phone rings again

"It'll cost six pounds eighty for a hundred of those screws"

"Order them"

"Are you sure? - it seems silly to get a hundred when you only need six"

"Alternatively less than seven quid to get the car back on the road is cheap"




I put my nice shiny new set-screws in my lights and made up packs of six and sold them to the rest of the club for a pound a set (and could possibly have ordered another hundred and made money). To this day many of the cars that turn up at club meets have nice shiny screws in the rear lights instead of the crusty originals. I warned them all about the risk of galvanic corrosion and told them to put a good coat of grease on them and slack them off and re-tighten every so often and no-one has told me of any seizing yet.
