Those 48s get a lot of (ab)use.I have never used a set of stillsons over 24" in anger.
Mainly because they’ve a 6” jaw

Hmm, I've never heard anyone describe Record stillys as cheap and nasty. Maybe some of the newest Irwins versions, but none of the older Records.Looks like Id describe as a cheap nasty sthilson, the kind bought by purchasing-on price, rather than an engineer on quality.
Offshore many of-them were float tested on a dark night, to avoid incidents when they were incorrectly use as a wheel key with 4 ft of scaffy tube on the end.
The weak point on the records seems to be the case part that’s broken on the OPs one. The ridgid has a solid type one piece handle. They were always the weapon of choice on drill ships for that reason. They were perceived as stronger. Not sure if that’s true but mine bust at the hook jaw, not on the body so maybe some truth in it?Hmm, I've never heard anyone describe Record stillys as cheap and nasty. I hated using big stillys on the tools, never touched bigger than 24" for years now, but the lads have a few sets of record 36"s for the odd occasion... Mostly with slightly bent handles, if you know what i mean...
The cast ridgid were the beast of choice when needs must, in a hurry with no one watching. Many a handle has been bent... Mostly with slightly bent handles, if you know what i mean...
How much are a 1kg pack of Eutectic 680 rods ? Just wondering if it`s feasible to keep a pack at home for repairs etc.
