Yeah it’s going to be a once a year use item maybe twiceMoore & Wright are middle of the road price wise.
I‘ve recently got a couple of digital mic’s used but in apparently great condition from evil bay, one was M & W the other made by Machine Dro.
I‘d have bought new Mitutoyo if I was going to be using them regularly but for very occasional use they’re a bit pricey especially in digital form
Got a mitituyo one but didn’t think it would be any good for valve shimsbuy a decent digital caliper . a lot more usefull and opens 150mm or 6 inch
Why not?Got a mitituyo one but didn’t think it would be any good for valve shims
Accuracy is +/- 0.03mm, a typical valve clearance range can be +/- 0.05mm or 0.18mm to 0.28mm for example. If you are going to the effort/time of re-shimming valve clearances accuracy of +/- 0.01mm of a typical micrometer would be better suited. Why not?
Why digital? Run of the mill micrometers are accurate to half a thou or 0.005mm and some have a vernier scale so are accurate to tenths of a thou or 0.001mm depending on your preferred flavour.
What was meant is if you pick up either mic, you can gauge what is half way between say .120” and .121” on the thimble, similarly you can gauge what is half was between .12mm and .13mm on the thimble. I wasn’t meaning to compare the two, only saying that depending on your preferred scale you can get down to a decent resolution'Half a thou' and 0.005mm differ by a factor of just over 2.5, so are not in the same field.
Agree on the analogue version. If, as he says in the original post, it will be used once a year, the batteries will be flat between first and second use.
