Recommend me a £100 smart phone which can take photos up close clearly.

oh thats why my wife takes photo's of obscur labels....esp when they r rubbed....
easy to blow up the size and move across the label mm's at a time....
we're all APPLE...been that way forever......TO OUR FAMILIES DISGUST.....who needs family......hahaha....

I get my refurb'ed phones from these peeps I've never had any problems with them, just be careful as some phones come without chargers.

My current phone is a Samsung A12, I purchased it from Backmarket about 8 months ago, it's not a modern phone by any standards, the model is about 6+ years old. Currently available for sale at £61.00

Another vote for Backmarket - just bought a Samsung A16 refurbed for £130 delivered to replace my failed S7. Plenty of choice on there.
It has about three or four lenses on it but i don't use for mainly pictures but assume ok and I think supported for another five years...

I escaped Apple and won't go back. If you are always within 3ft of a charger and don't mind apps stopping working as they do stop updating then maybe they'll be fine for you. This will be more of a problem if buying a second hand older model. My old iPhone 6 won't last more than a few hours without a charge now.

I'm on a Samsung A53 that's 2.5 years old and battery and camera is still good. Most apple things I've had are getting to the end of life by then for many more times the purchase cost. This Samsung will let me do a day's work and then go out in the evening without a charge.

Just my experience. Not interested in an argument with the apple fans either.

Honestly it might just be the issue that he's getting too close with the phone, most cheap phones don't have a proper macro lens so you get too close and it can't focus - the better option is to step back and bit and use the zoom on the phone to crop it down to where you want it. Might be worth a check before buying a new phone just for that, albiet most of the Google Pixels have decent camera setups (especially the pro versions) and can be had secondhand fairly cheap.

I just tried with my a53. It has a macro mode and using that my fingerprint was crystal clear about 1" from the lens.
