Recommend me a 1" torque wrench

Hey all,

Any suggestions for a 1" torque wrench, based on personal experience?

Max torque I need is approx. 500 Nm (370 ft/lb).

Ideally, towards the cheaper end of the scale, but it needs to be at least vaguely correct...

Can buy from UK or EU.

500nm sounds low for a 1" drive.
I've got a 3/4" that goes up to 800nm.

Why not use something like that with a drive adapter rather than struggling with a wrench bigger than you need?

That is an option (and sensible advice); however, all my (large impact) sockets are 1" and I do get irritated by adapters. There is also no problem having a wrench that operates to a higher torque than needed (so long as we're in the window). Who knows, I might even start using it elsewhere...rather than just slamming 'em up to max...

What make is your 3/4" wrench?

The adapters are annoying but probably easier to deal with than a huge torque wrench?
Generally the bigger the drive size, the longer the wrench. Although if you can find an 1" drive that only goes upto 500nm it might have be a sensible length.

The first issue with having a higher torque than needed is you might well loose out on the bottom of the range as the bigger ones don't usually start from zero.
Ie, a 3/4 might go from 150-800nm but a 1" might go from 300-1000nm (which only gives you a 200nm range if you don't need to go over 500)

Plus there is the accuracy, they vary how they are calibrated but a common method would be to sell one as 2% accurate over the range of the scale.
Or 1% (at a higher price)
Obviously 2% of 1000nm is a wider margin for error than 2% of 500nm so you could effectively get a more accurate reach for much the same (relative) price by choosing one that matches the actual range you intend using most often. (If that level of accuracy is required anyway?)

I forget what I needed to torque it to but it was far more cost effective getting this style thing.

Paid £130 for it from Zoro but unfortunately they're defunct now. Not a 1" drive in that particular model but one might be available.

Thank you, @sako243 . I hadn't even considered a digital torque meter. The link you sent is very interesting. I shall start researching them now.

PS which model Sako? I use an 85 in .308.

Have synthetic stainless 85 both in 243 and 300Win Mag.

These things are a cost effective way to set high torque values.
Just male sure you get one with an audible alarm as you won't be able to see the display half the time you use it!

The one I got actually goes a lot lower than advertised. It's not completely scientific but testing my manual torque wrenches against it clamped in a vice read pretty similar results so I'm happy enough.

Real big torque "loadings" - I do with maths and distance over length with a spring balance.

This is because it is yet another workshop expense have torque wrenches calibrated - the less I got - the less paying out I do...
