recommend a degrease product

Bit late in the day but I stuck in Wales today which is another story..

I've got a job tomorrow painting a machine, it needs a good degrease before hand. Can you fine chaps recommend anything from the likes of screw fix, b&q, wickes etc. No good being online as I need it first thing.

Also the boss has got his heart set on it being painted with hammerite, I'm not a big fan of the stuff and have heard good and bad about the stuff from aldi, or it it lidl? Anyways, if you know of some good paint that can be picked up from the same place as the degrease that you recommend then I will be grateful.

Also the job needs to be done in a day so none of that 'leave it to soak for a week and leave to dry for a further two weeks' and the paint takes a year to try.

The job is a balancing machine we have had some welding done on it to get it ready for being sold. Will try and get some pics..

Clean it down with diesel and a paint brush the wipe over with thinners to remove the oily residue.

I hate hammerite it's the devil , I'm not sure about the lidl screw fix offerings.

The aldi metal paint in the tin ain't bad, the stuff in the rattle cans is a bit thin so you will need more than you expect. I use automotive pre paint, then go over the surface with a heat gun to ensure all the pre paint has gone.

I agree, the original Hammerite was over rated the latest is simply rubbish, the only reason it's popular is due to clever repeated advertising.

Aldi paint is good but is not a one coat fix, it only really works with about 3 thin coats...so drying time would be way out for you.

Rustoleum seems to be pretty good paint and is available in most diy places.

Paraffin or kerosene, (heating oil), followed by white spirit. Kerosene seems to have a slight edge over paraffin on the degreasing front. They don't leave things quite as greasy/oily as diesel, but still need following up with white spirit or similar to make the surface suitable for painting.

Regarding Hammerite, I truly wouldn't touch that crap with a bargepole. It's dire stuff. See if you can talk him into some tractor enamel or similar. You can get enamels from any auto paint shop.

I hate Hammerite.

I tend to try and buy boat for painting for metal things!

Carb cleaner / brake cleaner, removes almost any and all grease...use it in the open air though Toolstation stock it at a decent price..

This stuff is fantastic, at least use it to finish off after removing the thick bulk.
It removes all trace of grease/oil, it's so effective that after use you can almost watch the steel rust in front of your eyes as it's so bare!

Just buy in in the 5l drums and ideally a spray to apply it.

They are pretty much the same thing, but paraffin is a slightly more refined version of kerosene, hence why it doesn't have quite the same edge. Paraffin is the stuff usually used for the old wick style lamps and such. Kerosene is notable by its more pungent odour, but otherwise they're not worlds apart. Kerosene is also cheaper, with it being the less refined variant.

You can also use panel wipe. You can get 5ltr of upol for about £15.

Hi, the cheapest, most effective and readily available de greaser is petrol. Hammerite is best for use on rusty metal, It just chips off of clean metal and other paint. As for what paint to use depends on the drying time available. Short - cellulose, longer - enamel.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Ended up getting some Swarfega de - greaser which did the job I needed but took a little more time, as for paint I ended up using hammerite, the only place I could find open and had everything I needed was B&Q. The hammerite went on really bad unless we got the metal bone dry and every drop of de-greaser was off it. Would the metal being cold affect how the hammerite went on, it seemed to stick in a big puddle then drag out across the metal with 10-15 brush strokes. But not covering it would suddenly stick and cover normally after the 10 or so brush strokes.. got more to do or even worse the boss might be doing it so some tips on where I went wrong would be good.

Yep i've used petrol/ brake cleaner thinners etc
Found the quickest way was to use the above, then a match, cleans grease off real quick -----------and warms the metal ready to paint

I don't think my boss would be pleased to hear that I got the machine de greased in record time but I also managed to burn down both workshops and the office.
