Hello,
Another question for the team.
Re: meshing for a concrete slab A393

I will be meshing an area 8metres square, to get it through the doors it will be in 6 pieces.
I have seen this stuff overlapped and wired together.
But, ideally, should the bars be joined rigidly end to end giving a continuous mat.?
Should it be welded , or using the couplers.?

Hi Howard,
Your right, its normal to overlap and wire the mesh-the concrete binds the joint in the end. If you want to save some mesh it will be ok to weld it back together in the room provided you get a good weld on it, the last thing you want to happen is have the power of a shrinking slab ripping your welds apart! (Rebar is not mild steel its harder-thus welding is a bit technical, also its nearly always rusty....) Also it will be pretty laborious all that welding. The sheets are 12m2 if I'm not mistaken-doesn't that give you enough mesh from one sheet to overlap it and save a whole load of hassle?

Most sites I'm on they just wire it together, can't remember ever seeing them weld it.
Just overlap it a foot or so with plenty of wire.

I used black nylon cable ties to tie my mesh together, easier and quicker for me than using wire to tie it all together.

When I poured the concrete for my cellar to kitchen conversion floor, I rolled up the grid weld to fit through the back door the floor was 27 square metres and I did it in 4 bits bag tied together ... jeff .
