RB44

Afternoon, someone on here has one i believe??
ive had a mad idea about getting one and converting into a camper ( already have a sprinter converted but it’s a tad small )
my concern is the MPG As it would be my daily drive.
so the question is what sort of mpg do you recon you would get out of one?

I believe that would be @8ob that has one (or two). I worked for Reynolds Boughton during their design and production run but I have no relevant real world fuel consumption figures, sorry.

20-25mpg if you behave yourself. They are not flying machines, with the wind behind you 55-60 ish MPH is about your lot. If you do go for one get the later version with the turbo phaser engine.

As Bob says, go for a Perkins phaser engines one. Be aware that one of the reasons for their lack of success in the army is that the MOD species the cheapest they could. Brakes are shocking, an update was done but I believe they’re still not very clever. Beyond that I seem to recall transfer cases can suffer failures but I may be getting my wires crossed

I had to do some work a few years ago on a 1990 RB44 fire tender, Perkins phaser with auto box, renault dodge cab. The brakes pulled to one side horrendously. It did it from new and it could never be solved despite complete brake system replacement numerous times. It was disposed of as parts were getting harder to source. Windscreen seal had to come from a scrapyard.

In an idle moment I googled RB44 and turns out the MOD stopped taking delivery of the RB44 due to brakes pulling to the left, so it wasn’t just us which had that problem with our solitary RB44 fire tender!

There was a bit more to it than that but essentially yes they had a problem and there were a few 'incidents'.

A lot of the issues were poorly adjusted brakes, another factor is the permanent four wheel drive which gives the equivelant of torque steer when braking hard in gear because of the very heavy engine rotating mass against the unequal length front halfshafts. When driven in anger this comes into effect, under normal driving conditions its a non issue. Some guys have modified them to disc brakes.

Friend of mine had one in that guise and it never got anywhere near the 20 to 25 Bob got Probably because it was always full and quite knackered
