why do rat/can paint go off colour and goes lighter colour, compared to prof/paint?
is it because of thinner pigment?
my car has been touched up but now its 3 years old the (red) paint has gone lighter in colour.
I've had a quote to respray both sills and wheel arches with a blow over on the said paint.
price was quoted at £300.
mine is a RED Focus with black alloy wheels.
if I do it myself I would paint the sills satin black similar to the new models and wheel arches in the same colour as the car.
I haven't done this for years but what I used to do on the wheel arches was to grind all the paint off and use a wire brush on the end of a electric drill to clean the rust out.
and any pin holes I drilled them out .
once all cleaned I put resin on with a matting on from the back of the arch and once hardened I'd give it another coat of resin back and front,
flattened down on the front arch and skim it over with filler ....
whether this the correct way of doing it without having to cut it all out and weld a new arch.
when I used to do this I did it before I sell the car so no idea if it worked ok after winter??

fibre glass only works so long the rust does re-appear the reason the paint fades is because it doesn't have good uv protection, if yours has faded try some compound on it or t-cut, it usually brings the colour back

i have always found that red is one of the worst colours at fading. You rarely see an older red car that has been left out in the sun that isn't a variety of shades depending on what material the paint is on

the car has done well considering its red it just where it was repainted with a can that has faded.

The mkii Astra I want to move on is red and a little faded but I think the newer Vauxhalls are much worse though for fading.

The car manufacturer has nothing to do with how good red paint is to a degree. A red Ferrari parked outside all day long would fade.
Red paint will absorb more of natural sunlight ( the visible green and blue part of the spectrum) causing the fading where as other colours will reflect these harmful rays.

Similar reason why black cars are hotter to touch whereas white or silver are cooler

Vauxhalls of a certain age were known for fading very badly, which was obviously down to the paint recipe and their specific shade and they wouldn't be aware of it possibly until a newer model superseded it, I've not known another make / colour to fade so badly

P reg Corsa B (aforementioned Flame red) my daughter bought as her first car. It used to change colour before your very eyes a bit like a chameleon

when i worked at a vauxhall dealer (spit) we had the most faded neglected heap come in for some paint work jobs and the boss backed the customer when he said the new paint stood out against the chalky pink lol

I bet they never even tried to blend it in, Philistines We buffed my daughter's car and used some coloured wax on it and it went back to being red for a while.
