rate my welding

hey folks

ive just dusted off my welder (after having it almost 6 years and only using it for about 20 mins) to try and restart learning welding.

ive laid some beads today and done a couple of joins with some box section i had loafing arround

was hoping some of you gurus may be able to give me a bit of advice by looking at the photos ive added

all were done with a clarke 105en with 0.8 gassless wire, settings 2, min & wire speed 4/5 and using the technique where you weld towards you (hope that makes sense)

the plan is to get some practice and competance so enable me to repair my landrover got a rear x member to replace

Not an expert myself, but I've done a fair few welds that look like that (minus the gasless wire slag), then redone them. I think that's sitting ON the metal rather than IN it, you need more power.

I agree a bit more power.

Will be easier to see if they were cleaned up with a wire wheel.

Am I allowed to say "ugh" without offending you Will?
It's very difficicult to tell what they're like as you haven't cleaned them up at all but like the others have said, way too low on power, the weld is just sitting on the surface.
Unfortunately gasless doesn't make for a pretty weld at the best of times, solid wire and gas is so much better and cleaner.
Keep at it though Will, you'll soon crack it .

i was following the recommendations for settins in the manual im aware they were only a guide but as i was doing them i was aware that they were a bit 'perky' is it called weld contour or something, will crank up the power tomorrow

cheers for all your advice though be as critical as you want or i wont learn anything

i was only using gassless as its in the machine i thought i would practice with this as its harder maybe, then go to solid wire with no gas.

do you think i should just ditch the gassless wire and use the solid wire with no gas

Absolutely Will!
Gasless has it's place but for general indoor welding you can't beat gas and solid wire. See if you can find a non-rental agent in your area, cylinder rental is a bit of a killer for low-volume users.
