in order to get to the contactor core u need the overload coils removing and u can se in the picture theres 2 metal clips on the sides holding the 2 halves of it together . i wouldnt worry about it humming as long as it isnt exesive

Yeah, think I'll put it with noise for now, I'm happy enough with 240v stuff but I'd be afraid of messing the whole switch up as it looks a bit complicated in there!
I need to get the sparky over at some point to sort a consumer unit for the new shed so I'll get him to have a look...talking of new sheds..
