After reading lots of good things about the Rapidor I have come across one of these in our local paper. It looks in good condition but I was just wandering if this would be "overkill" for someone who has just started welding. The price is £150 and it's single phase. The alternative would, perhaps be a cold saw.

Get it! If you decide it's over kill you will get your money back. I had one but got rid due to downsizing and got same as I paid for it

Reading this post makes me feel a bit guilty. I have had a Qualters & Smith power hacksaw which I bought from work (for scrap price) & have had stood in my workshop for a couple of years now (they were about to send it to the scrap heap in favour of a new bandsaw) .
Cosmetically it's not much to look at, but mechanically perfect apart from the damper needs some attention & it's need of an electric motor. The post has spurred me on to get it working.
Just as a matter of interest the blade on it is a Sandvick 350x25x1.25 (all mm) 14 TPI. Anybody suggest a good supplier for replacement blades if & when I do get it up & running?

And it was worth every penny sir and its now sporting a 1/2hp 1ph motor....
Tut tut old machines should be loved, cherished and used, convert it, use it...
Fleabay is one place to look for blades, but if you acquired the saw from work. I'd have a look in the stores first, there just maybe a supply of dusty blades wanting a good home...
Buy it, as MK said you can always sell it later if you don't use it, I also have a chop saw both have their uses, I wouldn't want to be without either now...
