Ransomes MG Crawlers

Hello chaps (and chap-ettes)

The good idea fairy has visited me and suggested searching for a Ransomes MG5 or MG6 crawler tractor.

Does anyone have one of these or know of anything to look for when buying one? They look absolutely amazing fun!

yes my old man had one always make sure its in neutral when starting as it has a centrifugal clutch and no safety interlock

it had a big sidevalve petrol engine fanncooled
obvious things would be steering clutches
track and sprocket wear
was made by Ransomes Simms and jefferies
ipswitch they were very popular with market gardeners

Don’t they have brake bands? I’ve had a look at some restoration threads in order to get an understanding of how they’re made up - reduction gears either side and a three speed box in the centre.

Our old fella had an mg6 with all the attachments. It was the only machine out of tractors, diggers, dumpers etc that he wouldn’t let me drive as a kid and for good reason. You have to reverse up hills as the can rear up and go over backwards, the tracks are unguarded and easy to get dragged into, and as stated above, there’s no safety interlocks. They’re a fantastic tool but horrendously dangerous

I was thinking of you actually the other day, as I tried to buy one and the guy said I was too young for it, at least I think it was you, with a scammell or an Alvis that the guy said you couldn’t handle it.
