If you're going to put a grate on top, cut the downpipe at an angle where it reaches the grate. If cut flat to the grate it will block with leaves and fill back up with water / leaves and you'll have to take the pipe off to clear, usually getting wet and cold when it comes off - don't ask how I know! Cut at an angle you can clear the leaves away easily without taking the pipe off.

The grille covering my outside gulley is the front of a shopping trolley basket

I found an abandoned trolley that had it's wheels nicked, removed the basket, flipped it over and cut the front off so it covered the gulley then cut holes in the mesh for the waste pipes.

People generally don't realise just how far tree roots (of any species) can travel, as a very rough guide you can expect half the width of the canopy again.

the one i had saw damage porcelain drains had entered it and the root was 5 meteres long in the pipe unbelievable till you see it
