Hi,
my mother wants some railings across the front garden...
nothing special, just a rectangle of 10x30mm flat with holes in the top rail to take some 12mm round. I thought I'd put some 'barrels' on some of the rails in a pattern of some sort, I've got 30mm balls for the rail tops and 40mm balls for the post tops. Posts will be 40mm box.
I know that the rails need to be less than 100mm apart but are there any regulations about height of the tops of the rails? I imagine the bottom rail about 3" above ground, the top rail about 36", with the rail tops sticking up about 3" or so. The posts would then be slightly higher, say about 41" above ground.
Does that sound reasonable?
The length will be about 126", wall plate at one end and two posts set in concrete. The two panels would then each be about 56 - 57" long allowing for posts and 'fixing' gaps, etc (final dimensions not fully calculated yet!). The actual position of the 'free' end of the fence isn't critical to a few inches, as long as they can get a car in, there's no gate.
I assume that 126" would be too long for a single panel due to the 'droop' in the middle at that length? I could put a small 'leg' under the middle but then wouldn't I have to brace the back of the panel anyway? There are small flagstones on the front garden so they're not particularly stable.
Where the fence is going there was a wall but it was taken down to just below ground level and concreted over some years ago. I thought I'd break through that where the two posts will go, sink them in a couple of feet and dollop some concrete in.
Regards
Peter
