I may well be wrong about this, so apologies if I am...
I've been asked the same sort of question before - "I want something like this done, I can get the materials".
After going out, measuring up, figuring out what materials are required and giving them a labour quote and list of materials, I get the response along the lines of "wow, that works out nearly the same as company x wants, I was expecting like 20 quid if I bought the stuff".
Well, I reply, I'm also a business and have the same overheads in various insurances, equipment, etc. as company x, why should it be a cheapy job?

is what makes me think along these lines, y'know, it's a sideline so "I'll sort you out with a good drink"...
