R8 Collets

Cheers Colin. I've looked at Arc and they do have a good looking set. Not sure I'm going to need all the ones in the set so probably cheaper to buy individually. Also cam across RDG tools.

Woody, I had a look on ebay and some joker has a set up with a starting price of £199, second hand!

Any ideas as to which sizes I should get? Basically, we've just got a mill but no tooling for it. I've done loads of milling but never actually had to buy bits for it and never really noticed which collets I was using. I just took the one that fit the cutter I had. Any ideas as to what I should get to start off would be welcome. I though I'd start with some end mills, a vice, clamping set, collets, chuck and adaptor for morse taper bits.

I use ER collets in my mill.
brilliant things , don't need thread on the end of the cutters, can put drill bits in etc. pretty sure you can get the holder in various sizes..MT or INT
the ER32 sets can hold up to a 20 mm shank.

Machine mart do a MT3 holder and a couple of collets up to 16mm for around £100.
i've been using this set for 7 years ok. can then buy individual collet sizes for £10 -£20 from somewhere like chronos.

Cheers, Wyn. I'll have a look at those before I dive into a load of R8's. I've never actually used them but I've seen them on a couple of CNC mills.

www.jlindustrial.co.uk have a look there. I got a set from them a while back. Just had a look in the J&L advantage catalogue R8 colets £8.95 each ex. vat.

Thank ee, all. Think it'll be Chonos as and when I get round to it. They seem to be cheapest for a set.

Next question, where to get a Heidenhain encoder fixed?! It's just the bulb that's gone in the Y-axis encoder but I bet someone'll try and flog me a whole new unit.
