quick poll to make my mind up

Personally I am a bit wary of electronics in a shed environment, great if used all the time but on an as an when basis, I'm not so sure. I could really do with a new stick welder & I wondered about an inverter, but not using it very often, I have visions of getting it out, it not working & the guarantee being just out. Being run as a business, it would get hammered on a regular basis & if it was going to fail, it would within the guarantee. A transformer doesn't care as long as it's kept dry how old is.

This is only my thoughts & I have no experience of inverters. I am probably incorrect & know a lot will disagree with me.

I am with PDG, unless you have thoroughly tried all of them its difficult to tell how each actually perform in the real world, figures dont tell you how they actually work although if manufacture s were 100% honest it would give a good expectation of what a machine can do.
there is another mig you should consider, its in one of the other questions what mig, tom orrow gives it the thumbs up, but as he sells kit you should obviously use your own judgement if suitable for you, and no thats no critisism of tom orrow what so ever, I watched the you tube thingy on it seems pretty good kit.

my inverter stick welder is stored in the house...it actually fits in one of the unused drawers under the tele

The thing is mate, polls aint much cop, there are three people connected to the forum who sell the kit. Why not just talk to them in order to make your choice?

ive messaged tom about his ideal unit, also found a video of it being review by, i suspect, tom himself. the front panel looks a bit daunting to begine with but after looking at it for a few seconds it looks quite straight forward. similar system to the GYS so just waiting for him to get back to me with his opinion

ive no need for 6mm with mig really...



one thing that has just occured to me is that i have to drive through cheltenham soon...right past cheltenham welding supplies so i could pick a CWS 160 up on the way back...

The Portamig is a great machine if you plan on keeping it in the workshop as they're quite heavy. They're well built though and are transformer based so will outlast the inverter models.

I would second that, if you are going pass the door, phone them, I would be suprised If when selling kit they would nt let you try it, take a few scrap metal pieces, 3mm and 1mm to to try, that way they cant say oh we dont have any thin tin.......Its worth waiting to get something you will be happy with. The more cynical among us call those units 'warranty returns'

wont be going for shop soiled units...i dont want seconds that they couldnt sell properly the first time...

im in talks with tom, its looking promising
