The clutch on my Triumph Daytona 600 (2004) has been rattling a bit more than it used to. I got the bike at 5400 miles and its now on circa 13000, so I know the bulk of its recent history. It rattles most when at rest and relaxed, with the noise going away when the clutch is pulled in. I thought it might have been wear in the release bearing, especially as the clutch cable has always been near the end of its adjustment (at the engine end) -ever since I got the bike this has been the case, with me having only ever made minor adjustments at the lever end to keep the free play in a good state.
Anyway the release bearing is perfect - its only a single row ball bearing so easy to inspect. I found some slop in the clutch outer drum, when rocked edge to edge. Triumph don't sell the needle roller bearing separate to the outer drum - but luckily enough I have determined that many Hondas use the same clutch basket and they do sell the bearing separately - so I will be investing in one of those - I have also ordered a new clutch cable from Triumph just to see how that sits; though its entirely possible they simply got made with the inner cable too long for the outer and hence always need a lot of slack adjusting out.
My question refers to a hard steel bush that makes up the inner race of the needle roller bearing, and runs itself on the gearbox input shaft. This is available from Triumph and I'm of a mind to replace it too, to compliment the new needle roller bearing, I have measured my bush OD at 34.88mm, which seems quite small for the bearing, which is sized at 35x42x23.
Would others agree the bush may be worn; again its speculation - Triumph might just make them small.
The clutch noise isn't quite at the Ducati stage yet and a lot of people wouldn't even notice it, but being mechanically sympathetic its aparant to me.
Thanks
