question for Hitch

I just wondered how you would go about constructing a large rack such as this one here from Hitch. Would you make it and then manoever it in with a forklift. Or Would you build it up on site ? I suspect its the latter. Though we had some done near our house and they used the former method which seemed the wrong way to me.

Build it, then crane/foklift/push/pull into place.

That was a bit of a pain to put together that one, the 4 corners are channels and the frames go right inside, not much room to slide the shelves down, you can leave the bolts loose, but movement is still limited.


We put that entire thing, including the side sheets and roof sheets together in our yard and transported it, lifted off with a forklift, and into place. Always try and keep site work to a minimum, especially in certain places.

thanks for answering quickly. I have only just noticed the channels you mentioned. I just assumed they were all angle irons without looking. As you say it must have made it harder to do.

Trying to keep the tops of the channels apart and get each frame down was a real pain.

If you have a similar job in mind, bolt it down. Concreteing can be a pain, once its in, its hard work to sort out if there is a problem. Some groundworks i have had to work with has been horendous (im sure im not alone!) chances of concreteing in 4 legs within 3mm is very slim

We always try to pre-fabricate everything as far as possible. Keeps you in the warm and dry for longer. There's always something you don't have on site when you come up against a problem. There's always a way round it tho.

Always get them to put flat concrete pads in and bolt down to it where possible. Gives a bit more room for adjustment. Don't forget the daywork pad for cutting baseplates off and rewelding after cutting of 350mm

I've lost count of the number of times I've been called-upon to adjust the level of concrete for fitting-up steelwork. Always seems like 'getting it in' is the primary concern for concrete gangs whether it's at the right level or not. I don't envy them when they gotta pour in the rain mind - that's a miserable job

Had one not that long ago, 7 pads, , only about 2 were the right height, one leg was ahlf over the edge of the pad, and to top it all, they had buried them all in about 2 feet of sticky clay mud

You would have loved installing things at Longbridge, we had to provide flash ground plates with tapped holes levelled and grouted ready for equipment to be sited on.

We could not be held responsible when one of the machine builders delivered a footbridge to join their two machines - 1500mm too short, a few red faces.

these things happen
