Hi all can anyone clue me up about pop riveters I have one but it is very difficult to snap thicker rivets (short handles)and was wondering what one of these to get Either the lazy tong type or the long reach handle type supposed to make it easier when doing loads of rivets.Dont want the pnumatic ones as I dont do a lot of riveting and they are expensive Thanks

I use a riviter where i cannot weld and the trick is to use the right size rivits for the job. I have both a lazy tong and also the more traditional handle ones. my handle ones i only use when i cant get in to the spaces with the lazy tongs. I tend to put two small pipes over the handels to get more leaverage when doing bigger rivets.
I brought a lazy tong one for £25 and its very good (i get through between 50-100 rivets a week) If i was you i'd invest in some pipes to go over the handles and get a layz tong like this I would also say that most of the time these things last 15-20 years unless you runover it with the car!

Obviously steel rivets are harder to pop than aluminium rivets.
Peetback rivets are hard to do by hand aswell.
I have lost count of the number of hand riveters i have folded up with my bare hands, no pipe extensions! For some big hands certainly help, as does strength. 5mmrivets are about the limit for a hand
riveter.
Lazy tongs are pretty easy to operate, but you need a fair bit of room. The same goes for long arm riveters. Both can be a bit awkward, forget single handed use.
Air ones are pretty good to be honest, youll pay as much for a cheap lazy tong type as a cheap air one.
If you really want a hand one, i will recomend a Gesipa Flipper
The black bit on the back comes off, and you can get in some pretty tight spaces with it.

Someone at screwfix screwed up Ha HaI see Screwfix sell a "Lazy Tongue Riveter"(for speach impedements ??)

I have a CK pair which are great, and also a long handled pair. Trick is to get just the right length rivet so that the rivet closes and pin snaps with a single movement of the handles.
Air rivet guns are fun tho!
Stainless steel rivets are a nightmare.
Once knew an apprentice who decided to make a water tank. Did a great job of folding the stainless, getting all the tags in the right place and made a real neat job. He struggled with the welding so drilled it and pop rivetted it together instead. Proud as punch brought it into the cabin to show off to all the seasoned fabricators. Part of him died that day when in unison half a dozen welders advised him that pop rivets aint water tight.

just be careful with the lazy tongue riveters, a few years ago i was doing an ally wing on my old series 3 LR and got a tad enthusiastic and pumped like mad then slipped and scrathed all down the side of my freshly hand rollered wing! lucky for me it was rollered on blue paint and it was an easy repair but be warned!
