Question About Cooling Suds And Anti-freeze?

My lathe lives in the garage with no heating at all, so anything water based liquid will probably freeze....

A silly question but humour me, please.

So does the soluble oil provide any form of anti-freeze qualities for the suds, if not is there a form of machining anti-freeze additive, or do I just drain the tank and cut dry?







Has anyone tried using vehicle anti-freeze???....

get a cup of it and stick it in the freezer, soon show if it'll freeze! (test works with anti freeze)

cuting oil will freeze but if you mix standard anti freeze it causes it to lose some of its properties, Ethyl glycol (EG) is the main ingredient in most automotive antifreezes because of its low freezing point. When antifreeze is mixed with cutting fluid, especially water-soluble oils and semi-synthetics, the EG causes the cutting fluid to separate, eliminating all of the beneficial properties of the fluid. Your cutting fluid won’t freeze but your machine and parts will rust.

Mine freezes.
The coolant in the ends of the mill table ice up first, then the plastic drum I
use as a tank turns into a big white ice lolly.

Oh well....sounds like WD40 and dry machining for the next few months then...

wOT LIKE MINE?but the heating needs to comply with health n safety, like mine, if you look closely you can see the back of the heater, needed it to unfreeze the bolts off the floor!

That's what you call underfloor heating

Again if you look closely you can see the white support leg and red sides of my workshop. Its good for keeping the draft out but was not very good at horizontal snow.

I usually cut dry unless threading or I need a very good finish, but I did notice last winter when I flicked the suds pump on that nothing happened. the pipe had frozen.

took the pipe off, warmed it with the blowtorch and it appeared that the oil and water had separated and the water had froze. granted I hadn't used suds for about 4 months before that though

I'm sure there was someone who started a thread about antifreeze someone had heard someone that used it as antifreeze in a motor. Try it in the freezer
