Quality Tig welding person wanted!

Hi, Would someone be able to tell me, how much it would cost to have a manifold flange tig welded onto manifold pipework (4 branch), once I have tacked the metalwork into position with my mig?

Would anyone on this forum (malcolm!) be willing to do the work for a fee?? :P

any help is greatly appreciated!

No not me! - I returned my TIG gas bottle to BOC yesterday, and besides I don't TIG well. I'm out as they say on Dragons Den, and I'm not sure which other dragons we have (apart from Rick) who like to do manifolds.

At the moment I am involved in a group buy on some 12mm flanges to suit my car, the manifold I will be ordering shortly and I hope to have both parts fairly soon.

whats it make of? you should give it a go yourself with the mig! if your doing all the work fitting it up you might aswel weld it together

I know I wont be able to make a good enough job, certainly wont match the welds on the rest of the manifold. T304 Stainless Steel 3mm thick 4branch to 12mm stainless flange.

ok, the group buy is all go now. Flanges are made and are now due in from the manufacturer and should be dispatched early next week from the groupbuy supplier.. I just need to get the manifold and then should be ready to roll. Just bought myself a cheap little runaround astra van but its cut me a little short for the month, so maybe end of this month for the manifold.

david if you choose to have a go welding your manifold be careful with distorsion on the flange face after welding as they can bow, ideally try to bolt to a jig before welding to keep flange face flat. What are you bolting the manifold to an ali head or cast?

Ok, where I'm at as far as getting together the parts.. I have a large order of parts coming for my engine build and the flanges are set to be shipped with everything else. Hoping sometime in the week I will hear that everything is ready to dispatch, worst case the following week. Still need to get my manifold though, but I can pretty much confirm it will be one of these jobbies -

replacing the existing flange with one of these to suit a T16 cylinder head -

I don't really get what your trying to do, but can confirm the manifold pictured above won't really last 2 minutes.

I can do the welding on it for you, if your looking to swap the header flange but in honesty i'd spend money on something better.

Heres a couple of similar manifolds that i've replaced/repaired in just the last couple of weeks. 1 was for a member on here.

Please explain why, as saying something wont last without some sort of explanation does'nt really help..

The point of this excercise for me is replace a standard and slightly restrictive manifold from a rover t16 with a 200sx s14 middle of the road stainless tubular jobby whilst maintaining a near standard turbo mounting point, admitedly there are better options available perhaps but at 5-8x the price. This manifold is proven to give good results and at a reasonable budget, for me. I cant see where the problem regarding longevity of the product comes into it..

Please advise though as I am by know means an expert.

Many of the aftermarket mass produced stainless manifolds tend to fail very quickly (that's being kind), i suspect that's what's Rick's getting at...

Seen a lot of dead 200sx manifolds, a few were worth repairing

Edit. The guy that owned the manifold in that link has since reworked things again. Initially he fitted the rb25 version of that manifold (with stock turbo) while running in the engine/saving up for a bigger turbo for the next stage. Was on for less than 2000 miles. I popped over when he was fitting the new turbo as it ment i had to modify his induction and downpipe set up.

Found several cracks in this 2000 mile manifold, lots more when it was off the car! Ended up cutting off some of the flanges to reuse... boy did that thing 'spring' when cut, completely changed shape!!
